Find Anagrams or Unscramble Letters into Words

Our solver separates exact anagrams from other words that can be formed using your letters, so you can get to the type of answer you actually need.

Exact Anagrams

An exact anagram rearranges the original letters without adding or removing any.

LISTEN→SILENT

Both words contain exactly the same six letters, once each.

Use the Solver as an Anagram Generator

If you already have a word and want to generate alternative anagrams from it, enter the word and select Use every letter. The results will only include words containing exactly the same letters.

Other Words You Can Make

When “Use every letter” is turned off, the tool also works as a word unscrambler, finding shorter words that can be built from your available letters.

With LISTEN, for example, the anagram solver can return full-length matches as well as shorter words such as:

INLETS

ISLET

TILES

LENS

NEST

TIN

These results are grouped by word length, making it easier to scan longer possibilities first and then work down to shorter words.

Definition

What Is an Anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase. In an exact anagram, every original letter is used the same number of times.

Anagrams can involve single words, names, or complete phrases.

If you want a fuller explanation of the rules and different types, read our guide to what an anagram is.

Choose the Right Anagram Tool

Different puzzles need different kinds of matching. Rather than forcing every search through one tool, Solve Anagrams provides specialised anagram solvers for the most common tasks.

A UK-Focused English Anagram Solver

Solve Anagrams is designed primarily for people searching from the UK.

The solver uses a broad English word list with a separate common-word ranking layer and selected British spelling adjustments. In Recommended mode, that ranking data is used to favour more familiar entries over less common alternatives where the result ordering allows.

The database is not an official Collins, Oxford or Scrabble word list, and the presence of a word in our results should not be treated as confirmation that it is valid in a particular tournament or word game.

If you want to understand the vocabulary behind the tool, see our dictionary sources.

Common Questions About the Anagram Solver

Does an Anagram Have to Use Every Letter?

An exact anagram does. It uses every original letter the same number of times, only in a different order.

Our homepage solver can also show shorter words that can be made from some of your letters. Select Use every letter when you want to restrict results to full-length matches.

Can I Use the Solver When I Do Not Know Every Letter?

Yes. Enter ? in place of an unknown letter.

For example, ST?NE allows the question mark to represent any one letter. The solver currently accepts up to three wildcards.

Is the Solver Designed for UK English?

Yes. SolveAnagrams is designed for a UK audience and uses a UK-focused ranking layer with selected British spelling adjustments.

The underlying database is still a broad English word list rather than an authoritative British-only dictionary, so international and less common forms may also appear.

Is the Anagram Solver Free?

Yes. The solver is free to use and does not require an account for a search.

Can I Solve Anagrams Containing Several Words?

Yes, but use the Multiple Word Anagram Solver for that task. It is designed to search for two-, three- and four-word combinations rather than ordinary single-word results.

Can I Use It for Crossword Clues?

Yes. For a crossword where you know some answer positions, the dedicated Crossword Anagram Solver is more useful because it supports known-letter patterns as well as the scrambled letters.

Are All Results Valid Scrabble Words?

Not necessarily.

SolveAnagrams currently uses a general UK-focused English word list. It is not an official Collins Scrabble word list, so you should check the rules and approved dictionary for the particular game you are playing.

Can I Use This as a Word Unscrambler?

Yes. Leave Use every letter turned off and the solver will find shorter words that can be formed from your available letters as well as full-length matches. If you only want exact anagrams, turn Use every letter on.

Can I Use This as an Anagram Generator?

Yes. Enter a word and select Use every letter to find exact rearrangements containing the same letters.
